MacBook Pro logo not lighting up?

The logo on the new MacBook Pro only glows in some conditions, and a setting can keep it off. Check these, from most to least likely.

1. Is the Mac awake?

The logo is lit only while the Mac is awake. It goes dark when the Mac sleeps. With the lid closed, it looks like plain polished metal.

2. Is the room dark, or your screen turned down?

The logo dims with your screen brightness and with the light in the room. In a dark room with a dim screen, it can be so faint it looks off. Turn your screen up to check. How the logo's brightness works.

3. Was it turned off in Terminal?

Apple's Terminal command turns the logo off for every account on the Mac, and it stays off. To turn it back on, open Terminal, run this command and enter your administrator password:

sudo defaults delete com.apple.CoreBrightness LEBacklightMode

4. Did you move from another Mac?

If the logo was turned off on your old Mac, the setting comes with you when you migrate. The command above turns it back on.

5. Did you turn it off in Backglow?

Backglow keeps the logo off even after you quit it. Open Backglow, click the dot in your menu bar, and turn the logo on.

6. Is it the right MacBook?

Only the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display has this glowing logo.

Still dark?

Reinstalling macOS also turns the light back on, but try the Terminal command first. It's much quicker. If the logo still doesn't light up, contact Apple Support.
